SEGAMAT: Datuk V. M. Panjamothy’s MIC membership was immediately terminated when he decided to contest as an Independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Confirming this, MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said in accordance with the MIC party constitution, any member would automatically lose the membership upon contesting for a party other than the MIC or Barisan Nasional (BN).
“This rarely happens, maybe one or two cases will occur compared to the 460,000 MIC memberships throughout the country and it will not affect the MIC machinery in facing the GE14,” he said when asked to comment on Panjamothy’s action.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 21st annual general meeting of the Administrative Assistant (Education) Union of Peninsular Malaysia, Segamat branch at the auditorium of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Jementah 2, here today.
Commenting on the status of another MIC member, Datuk Seri S. Surash, who is contesting as an Independent for the Jeram Padang state seat in Ngeri Sembilan, Dr Subramaniam said Surash had quit the party before the nomination date. — Bernama
