ALOR STAR: A Myanmar labourer was charged in the sessions court here yesterday with trying to offer a RM1,600 bribe to a Marine Operations Force (MOF) personnel last month.
Soe Moe Thu, 33, who pleaded guilty after the charge was read out before Judge Juraidah Abas, however, was not sentenced yesterday.
This is because the court has fixed June 10 for the charge to be read again to the accused via an interpreter before recording the plea.
According to the charge sheet, Soe is alleged to have attempted to give investigating officer Insp Mohd Yusaini Abu Bakar from the Langkawi MOF a RM1,600 bribe as an inducement not to take action against him and others detained under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants 2007 and the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
The offence is alleged to have taken place at the Region 1 MOF Headquarters, Persiaran Putra, Kuah, Langkawi at 3.30pm on April 26.
The charge under Section 24(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
