For those who are regulars to Starhill shopping centre along Jalan Bukit Bintang would have noticed that the place has been under renovation for the whole of this year, by the looks of the work is not going to end well into end of 2021. Well there is a reason for it, YTL Land & Development the building owner has been preparing the luxury mall for the impending addition of a ‘book store’ as its anchor tenant.
You might be thinking why a bookstore in place of luxury brands like Louis Vuitton or Rolex, because this is no ordinary bookshop! Eslite Spectrum from Taiwan is world reknown for its cutting edge concept and variety of items on display. Its also the world’s first 24-hour bookstore and is touted to be a creative cultural venue with a rich selection of Chinese, English and Malay language books, as well as music, design and hand-made goods, performing arts, themed restaurants and coffee shops, lifestyle brands, and diverse cutting-edge cultural and creative brands.
Once opened in 2020, the bookstore will occupy approximately 70,191 sq ft commanding the entire Level 1 space and including a street-fronting F&B outlet on the Ground Level right next to The Starhill Piazza. Eslite Spectrum had been chosen by Time Magazine and CNN as “Asia’s Best Bookstore” and “World’s Coolest Bookstore”. In Taiwan the store is regarded as an icon and must visit-shop-dine destination for visitors.
YTL has been looking for a suitable tenant to replace its jaded facade ever since Pavillion opened its doors, the newer mall managed to attract some of the bigger international luxury brands away, leaving The Starhill void of visitors who used to flock for the premium brands. With a new outlook and refocused strategy, the mall together with Eslite will turn the Bukit Bintang district into a prominent high-end, must visit locale.
