Top Glove the worlds largest glove manufacturer is shutting down its manufacturing facilities in Meru, Klang after its workers became the latest victims to the Covid-19 wave raging in Selangor.
After days of speculation over the extent of spread among its workers in the hostel, the company was issued a temporary stoppage order by the government after more that 1800 tested positive out of its 5700 work force. Authorities were concerned despite the lockdown of the hostel, cases continued to rise which prompted the closure of 28 of the factories to facilitate with cleansing and thorough screening activity.
Top Glove will be working work closely with local health department and has agreed to cooperate fully to implement the temporary stoppage by stages to its manufacturing facilities. During the daily pandemic update by the Health Director General, it was noted that Selangor has now overtaken Sabah to record highest number of positive cases. The increase however not community base, is mostly attributed to factories and workers. Suffice to say, the Health Ministry has been actively engaging with industries with high number of employees to practice extra caution and to strictly adhere to SOP to prevent outbreaks.
Not a headline Top Glove would like to have, but the virus is aggressive and nobody can predict or prevent an outbreak. The best is to follow guidance and hope for the best. The compamy has acted on the cases and already screened about 5,700 workers at the hostels. Subsequently, disinfection exercises at the premises and accommodation are being conducted regularly, with all the necessary precautionary measures strictly in place.
